What Should You Consider When Choosing Staircases?

Posted on

A staircase is an important addition to any home or building that has two or more storeys because it helps you access the different floors. To ensure you choose a staircase that suits your needs, consider the following factors:

Material Composition

You can either choose a staircase made from timber, concrete, steel, aluminium, glass, etc. To help you choose between these materials, you should consider the staircase material cost, your taste and preference, the aesthetics of your space, how easy it is to maintain the material you choose, etc.

If you are having a hard time selecting the material, your designer or staircase contractor should be able to help you out.

Design

Staircase designs differ in appearance. For example, you can come across spiral, round, typical (standard), angular, floating, textured, art, patterned and coloured staircases.

When choosing a staircase design, you have to consider the aesthetics of the space so that the design matches it. It is highly recommended to let your designer help you choose a staircase design. You can easily choose the shape you like, but you might have some trouble matching colours.

Staircase Height

Consider the people who are going to use the staircase and their age. The height that a person should lift his or her leg should not be too high because the old and young might struggle. Remember that you are also aging, and at some point, you don't want to struggle climbing up the stairs.

Staircase Balustrades

It is important to have staircase balustrades installed to protect you from falling off or to offer a place for support as you climb up or down the stairs. You can choose glass, timber or stainless steel. Again, your choice depends on your taste and preference, the aesthetics of the space, durability, cost and ease of maintenance.

Balustrades come in different designs, especially if you are using stainless steel bars. You can have the bars moulded into different shapes and painted in your desired colours.

Additional Staircase Features

Sometimes, you might need stairs made according to your particular specifications. For example, you can have limited space and you want to install a bookshelf below the staircase or insert drawers on the staircases. If these are your desires, you should ensure the staircase company you choose can meet these needs. You might also have to choose timber staircases because the most suitable material for drawers and bookshelves is timber.
